Bitumen emulsion

Bitumen carried in water, laid without heat.

Overview

CRS-1 · CRS-2 · CSS-1 · CMS-2

An emulsion is fine bitumen droplets held in water by an emulsifier. Once laid, the water leaves and the bitumen sets. Cationic grades are named by how fast they set: rapid (CRS), medium (CMS) and slow (CSS). No heating and no solvent, so they are the cleaner choice for tack coats and maintenance.
